Education Minister Warns Schools Against Religious Restrictions

Ghana’s Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has urged schools to respect students’ religious freedom, emphasizing that no student should be denied the right to practice their faith.

Speaking at a meeting with the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) award winners in Accra, he reminded institutions that Ghana is a secular state and must uphold the constitutional right to religious freedom.

“Students should practice their religion freely, as the constitution allows. We must ensure strict compliance with religious freedom,” he stated.

The meeting was part of the 68th Independence Day Awards ceremony, which honors outstanding students for academic achievements. The event also celebrated students with disabilities who excelled in the BECE.

Minister Iddrisu also stressed the importance of education, discipline, and integrity in shaping Ghana’s future. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to digital transformation in education, promising more laptops and digital learning resources for students.

The awards recognized 52 top students from all 16 regions, representing 32 public and 16 private schools.
