Thomas Ampem Nyarko, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Asuogyaman, has supported over 200 tertiary students, including freshmen and continuing students, with financial assistance for their academic fees.
The MP issued a cheque of GHC 300,000.00 to help level 200 students in his constituency pay their fees, fulfilling his pledge to assist financially struggling but bright students each academic year.
The MP’s office receives numerous applications for this fee-paying support, which helps students who are having difficulty paying tuition fees and hostel bills. This year, at least four students from each of the 37 Electoral Areas in the constituency were selected to ensure fairness.
The supported students are pursuing various courses such as Law, Nursing, Medicine, and Engineering but faced challenges in raising funds for their education.
Although the distribution was delayed, it followed struggles by the MP to access his share of the assembly’s common fund, which was allegedly withheld by the former District Chief Executive (DCE), Mavis Opokua Akunnor.
During a ceremony to distribute the funds, the MP expressed plans to raise more support for this initiative, citing positive feedback from private companies and hotels willing to contribute. He emphasized that more funds will be mobilized to assist even more students in the future.
The MP encouraged the students to perform well academically, stating that future support would be based on merit, requiring evidence of good results. He also urged continuing students to submit their transcripts with future applications to show progress.Beneficiaries of the support, like Azi Salvation, expressed gratitude for the financial help, noting the high cost of tertiary education in the country.
They appreciated the MP’s ongoing support, which has been crucial in helping ease their financial burdens. The MP also criticized the former DCE, Mavis Opokua Akunnor, for blocking the initiative last year by refusing to sign the cheque for the common fund, which hindered the financial support.
Nyarko also supported the NDC’s free tuition policy for first-year tertiary students, believing it will further help students access tertiary education and allow him to focus his efforts on assisting continuing students in his constituency.
