From Illegal Miner to KNUST Valedictorian: The Inspiring Story of Eliasu Yahaya Bansi

Eliasu Yahaya Bansi, a BSc. Real Estate graduate from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has captured widespread admiration for his remarkable journey.

At the university’s 58th congregation, Bansi was named the best-graduating student of the College of Arts and Built Environment, achieving an outstanding Cumulative Weighted Average (CWA) of 81.04.

Bansi’s journey was far from easy. Coming from a family where no one had attended university before, he faced significant financial struggles and unstable living conditions.

To support himself, he engaged in illegal mining, known as “galamsey,” during school breaks. This dangerous work claimed the life of his close friend, Abubakar, who died while fleeing a mining site.

The tragedy motivated Bansi to abandon illegal mining and focus fully on his education. Determined to succeed, Bansi relied on the support of his siblings, friends, and lecturers.

In his second year, he faced severe financial difficulties but received help from fellow students and the KNUST Food Bank, which provided school fees and food supplies, enabling him to continue his studies.

During his valedictory speech, Bansi called on university authorities to assist students in similar situations, highlighting the importance of community support for those facing hardships.

His story has inspired many, with social media flooded with congratulatory messages celebrating his resilience and determination.

Bansi’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and the transformative impact of support in overcoming adversity, proving that greatness is possible even in the face of significant challenges.
