Ghana Rolls Out New Curriculum for STEM

Ghana is set to roll out a new Senior High School curriculum for the 2024/2025 academic year, marking a significant transformation in the country’s education system. 

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) and the Ghana Education Service (GES) have been working together for two years to develop this new curriculum, which will cover Senior High School, Senior High Technical School, and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) nationwide. 

The new curriculum aims to equip learners with essential 21st-century skills, provide a strong academic foundation, and prepare them for the world of work. 

It will focus on instilling Ghanaian values, culture, and morals in students, and offer flexible learning pathways to suit their interests and career goals. 

Additionally, intervention programs in Mathematics and English will be introduced to support students who need extra help. 

To ensure a smooth implementation, teachers will undergo extensive training through weekly Professional Learning Community sessions. 

Teacher manuals aligned with the new curriculum have also been developed in partnership with the Ministry of Education and subject associations. 

The assessment approach will shift from traditional exam-based evaluations to more comprehensive methods that assess critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving abilities. 

According to Prof. Yayra Dzakadzie, Director-General of NaCCA, “The new curriculum is very transformative and designed to shape the next generation of Ghanaian leaders… It’s a groundbreaking shift towards equipping learners with the essential skills needed to succeed in the fast-paced modern world”. 

This new curriculum is expected to redefine the future of Ghana’s education and better prepare learners for the demands of the modern world.
