The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the cancellation of subject results for 4,108 candidates who sat for the 2024 West African Senior High School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in Ghana.
Additionally, WAEC has cancelled the entire results of 483 candidates, withheld subject results for 781 others, and withheld the entire results of 209 candidates. These actions were taken due to various exam malpractices, including the use of unauthorized materials and mobile phones during the exams. The 4,108 candidates had been caught bringing foreign materials such as prepared notes, textbooks, and printed materials into the exam halls. The 483 candidates whose entire results were cancelled were found in possession of mobile phones during the exam. Other candidates were penalized for various other offenses. WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John K. Kapi, stated that these decisions were made during the 37th meeting of the Ghana Examination Committee on December 16, 2024. Furthermore, the subject results of candidates from 319 schools across the country have been withheld due to suspected collusion, with investigations still ongoing. This year, a total of 460,611 candidates—212,954 males and 247,657 females—sat for the WASSCE, marking a 2.66% increase in candidate numbers compared to 2023. However, 4,609 candidates were absent from the exams.
