UK Student’s Initiative, CATS for Ghana, Aims to Improve Education, Healthcare

University of Kentucky sophomore Akua Asamoah has founded CATS for Ghana, a club dedicated to providing free tutoring services to elementary and middle school students in a rural Ghanaian village via Zoom.

Asamoah, a 2024 Chellgren Fellow and public health major, stated, “CATS For Ghana is an organisation brought about to reduce health and educational inequality in Ghana.”

The club has approximately 25 members and aims to tutor over 200 students.

Asamoah noted, “My hope is to help the students do well. In Ghana, if you don’t do well in school, you can’t go to college, you can’t get a job, you can’t pay for health care.”

This initiative is personal for Asamoah, who was born in Ghana and has maintained strong ties to her country.

She previously donated 500 books and received $500 in grant funding to provide technology to a Ghanaian school.

Asamoah plans to pursue medical school through UK’s Early Assurance Program and hopes to perform global surgery for Doctors Without Borders. Students interested in joining CATS for Ghana can find more information.

The University of Kentucky continues to foster innovative initiatives and community engagement through students like Asamoah, advancing the institution’s mission to serve the Commonwealth and the world.
