University Of Ghana Re-Appoints Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo As Vice-Chancellor

The University of Ghana’s Governing Council has unanimously re-appointed Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo as Vice-Chancellor for a second four-year term, starting in October 2025.

This decision was made after a rigorous evaluation of her leadership during her first term, which was marked by transformative initiatives that enhanced the university’s academic and infrastructural landscape.

Professor Amfo’s achievements during her first term include modernizing classrooms, implementing the One-Student-One-Laptop initiative, and establishing hotspot comfort zones across campuses.

She also created the Centre for Disability Studies and Advocacy and introduced Gender and Internship Policies.

Additionally, she addressed the university’s debt burden and launched the Legon Leadership Academy, which aims to foster academic excellence, inclusivity, and diversity.

Under her leadership, the University of Ghana achieved top rankings in various global indices, including the Webometrics Rankings, the AD Scientific Index, and the Global 2000 List by CWUR.

In 2024, the university excelled in the Times Higher Education Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings.

For her second term, Professor Amfo plans to consolidate these gains and address persistent challenges by implementing the university’s 2024-2029 Strategic Plan. As the first female Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Amfo has been a champion of innovation and digitalization.

She has launched a comprehensive digitalization program to improve the university experience for all stakeholders.

Beyond her role at the university, Professor Amfo is actively engaged in several prominent organizations, including the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences and the African Research Universities Alliance. She serves as President of the Fédération Internationale des Langues et Littératures Modernes and Vice-Chair of ARUA, among others.

Professor Amfo’s academic achievements are equally commendable, holding a PhD in Linguistics from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and a Bachelor’s degree in French and Linguistics from the University of Ghana.

Her excellence has been recognized with numerous accolades, including the Ghana Woman of the Year for Excellence in Education Award and the Legacy and Gadia State Award.
