University of Ghana Suspends Senior Lecturer Over Sexual Harassment

The University of Ghana has suspended Dr. Sampson Obed Appiah, a senior lecturer from the Sociology Department, for two semesters following his conviction for sexual harassment.

According to an official notice dated March 12, 2025, signed by the University’s Registrar, Mrs. Emelia AgyeiMensah, Dr. Appiah was found guilty of violating Section 1.1(A) of the Sexual Harassment and Misconduct Policy and Section 10.0 of the Code of Conduct for Academic Staff.

As part of the sanctions, Dr. Appiah must issue a formal written apology to the complainant and is barred from applying for promotion for one year. Additionally, he is required to undergo training on sexual harassment and misconduct organized by the university’s Anti-Sexual Harassment Committee.

Dr. Appiah’s suspension is part of broader disciplinary actions that also affected 16 students, who were penalized for various forms of misconduct.

The university emphasized the importance of all members adhering to its regulations and standards of conduct.
