Afenyo-Markin Urges Government To Waive Admission Fees For 100 Level Students

The Minority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has called on the Mahama administration to fulfill its pledge to cover admission fees for first-year students at public universities by waiving these fees outright.

During the approval of ministerial nominees on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, Afenyo-Markin expressed concern over reports that students and their families are still required to pay admission fees upfront, despite the government’s promise to absorb the costs.

He referenced comments made by Education Minister-designate Haruna Iddrisu, who indicated that students who have already paid their admission fees would be reimbursed later in the year. Afenyo-Markin questioned why universities were not directed to waive the fees from the outset.

“This raises the question: why did the government not instruct universities to waive these fees in the first place, knowing that it would cover the costs in the coming months?” he asked, highlighting the financial burden this has placed on students and parents.

He pointed out the difficulties faced by families unable to raise the required fees upfront, adding, “Not every student or parent can afford to pay the admission fees.”

Afenyo-Markin urged the government to expedite the process of absorbing the costs and ensure students are not disadvantaged by financial constraints.

He called on the administration to live up to its commitment and implement the policy effectively to ease the financial burden on families.
