Betting Tax Debate Sparks Social Media Uproar

Recent comments by former Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam have ignited a heated debate on social media after he refuted claims that his administration introduced or implemented the controversial betting tax.

Current Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson announced the tax’s removal in the 2025 Budget presented to Parliament, but Dr. Amin Adam argued that the tax was never enforced under the NPP government, calling the announcement deceptive.

During the 2024 elections, then-NPP presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia had promised to abolish the betting tax if elected. However, opposition figures now argue that the tax was never implemented, making the government’s announcement misleading.

The controversy has sparked intense discussions online, with the hashtag #AbolishTheTax trending. Some social media users questioned how a tax that was never enforced could be abolished, while others defended Dr. Amin Adam for setting the record straight.

Memes and sarcastic posts flooded platforms, with one user tweeting, “How can they abolish something that was never implemented?” Others debated the potential impact of the tax proposal on young Ghanaians and the economy.
