Brazilian Court Orders Removal of Adele’s Song from Streaming Platforms

A court in Brazil has ruled in favor of local composer Toninho Geraes, ordering the removal of Adele’s song “Million Years Ago” from all radio and streaming platforms worldwide due to alleged copyright infringement.

The decision was made after Geraes accused Adele of copying his 1996 song “Mulheres,” performed by Martinho da Vila, in her 2015 hit.

Geraes is seeking $160,000 in moral damages for lost royalties and is demanding to be credited as a co-writer of Adele’s song.

The court’s ruling also comes with a warning to the Brazilian branches of Sony and Universal Music Group, threatening an $8,000 fine “per act of non compliance” with the removal order.

The case shows the importance of copyright protection and the potential consequences of plagiarism in the music industry.

As the court’s decision is enforced, Adele’s song will be removed from streaming platforms, and the British singer may face further legal action if found guilty of copyright infringement.
