CETAG Begins Indefinite Strike Over Unresolved Issues

The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has announced an indefinite strike starting Thursday, January 2, 2025.

This decision follows a meeting on December 30, 2024, where the union expressed frustration over the government’s failure to address long-standing issues, despite previous discussions and arbitration rulings.

CETAG highlighted several unresolved problems, including the government’s failure to honor a May 2023 arbitration award.

This award required the migration of college staff onto the pay structure of their affiliated universities, which has not been completed after 20 months.

Other issues include the delayed payment of compensation for 2022 work, unpaid allowances for some colleges, and unissued staff appointment letters, which were due by October 2024.

The union also criticized the National Labour Commission (NLC) for not enforcing its own directives, despite CETAG’s repeated requests. The strike will halt academic activities at colleges of education, affecting teacher training across the country.

CETAG emphasized that no members would return to work until all payments and actions are completed, and warned that the strike will continue indefinitely unless their demands are met.
