D-Black Says He Was Expelled from Pope John SHS in His Final Year

Ghanaian rapper and businessman D-Black has shared that he was expelled from Pope John Senior High School and Minor Seminary during his final year because he kept breaking school rules to follow his passion for music.

In an interview with Blac Volta, the “Vera” hitmaker talked about how his love for music clashed with the strict rules at the Catholic boys’ school.

“I got expelled in my final year,” he said. “In boarding school, when you break the rules the first time, you get suspended. The second time, you’re removed from the boarding house. The third time, you’re completely expelled.”

D-Black explained that his first offense was in his first year when he left school without permission to go to Accra and record music with famous musicians Obrafour and Edem.

“I had the chance to record in a studio with Obrafour and Edem. Hammer was working on a project and invited us. So I left school to rap. That was my first suspension,” he said.

Despite the suspension, he broke the rules again the following year. This time, he traveled again to Accra to record music and got caught. As a result, he was removed from the boarding house (deboardinised).

“In second year, I did the same thing. I went to Taifa in Accra to record. We were caught and I was deboardinised,” he said.

Even after being removed from boarding, he still broke the rules. His third offense happened when he returned late from a weekend trip to Accra.

Since he was no longer a boarding student, weekend travels were allowed, but he was supposed to be back in time for Monday classes.

“We came back late on Monday when we should’ve been in class. That got us into trouble again.”

Because of this, he was brought before the school’s disciplinary committee and expelled along with four other students.

“They called us in and kicked us out—about five of us,” he said.
