‘Every SHS to Cultivate Farms’ – Agriculture Minister-Nominee

The Minister-designate for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku has announced plans to make institutional farming a priority by ensuring every secondary school in Ghana establishes and maintains its own farm.

This initiative, which Opoku discussed during his appearance before Parliament’s vetting committee on January 20, 2025, aims to boost the nation’s agricultural sector by utilizing the available land resources within schools.

Opoku emphasized that this initiative would not only address the persistent food shortages in secondary schools but also improve the quality of meals provided to students.

“If nothing else, we can reduce the cost of school feeding and enhance both the quality and quantity of the food provided to our students,” he stated.

The new ministerial plan also includes collaborating with the Ministry of Education to recruit laborers to help secondary schools establish and maintain these farms.
