‘Ghana Would’ve Been Like Dubai If I Was Still President – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has criticized the Akufo-Addo administration for what he sees as a lack of meaningful development despite significant borrowing.

Speaking during a prayer session with Muslim clerics in the Ashanti Region on December 2, 2024, the NDC Presidential Candidate compared his administration’s achievements with the current government’s performance.

Mahama revealed that during his four-year tenure, his government borrowed $3.5 billion, which was used for transformative projects such as new harbors, an airport, and critical infrastructure.

In contrast, he highlighted that the Akufo-Addo administration has borrowed approximately $11.5 billion over five years without delivering the expected progress.

“Within five years, [President Akufo-Addo] took a loan of $11.5 billion. I was in power for four years, and all the things we did—new harbors, an airport, and many other projects—were from a $3.5 billion loan,” Mahama said.

He further asserted that if his administration had access to the same financial resources, Ghana could have achieved development comparable to Dubai. “Ghana would have been like Dubai under me if I got the kind of money Akufo-Addo had,” he declared.

Mahama’s comments are part of his broader critique of the government’s handling of the economy and its impact on the nation’s development.
