Government to Build 600-Bed Hostel for Dr Hilla Limann Technical University

The government is going to build a 600-bed hostel for Dr Hilla Limann Technical University in Wa, Upper West Region. This is to help solve the school’s accommodation problems and make it more attractive to students and parents.

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, made this known during the inauguration of a new 19-member Governing Council for the university in Accra on May 8, 2025. He said the university is currently the only public university in Ghana without a hostel, which makes life difficult for students.

New Governing Council

The new Council is led by Prof. Julius N. Fobil, a former top official from the University of Ghana. Other members include:

  • Prof. Elias Nortaa Sowley, Vice Chancellor of the university
  • People appointed by the President
  • Representatives from education bodies like GTEC and CTVET
  • Members from business groups, alumni, and school staff (teaching and non-teaching)
  • A student representative, Zakaria Yakubu, and alumni representative, Annaakaa Waris

Problems at the University

The Minister also talked about some of the problems the university is facing, like recent labour strikes. He said strikes will happen from time to time, but it is important to manage them well to keep peace on campus.

He mentioned that the current Vice Chancellor’s term ends on May 31, 2025, and asked the Council to work quickly with GTEC to find a new Vice Chancellor. He said this will prevent delays or confusion in running the university. He also promised that the government will not interfere with the university’s academic decisions.

Council’s Promise

Prof. Fobil, the new Council Chairman, thanked the government for the trust placed in them. He promised that the Council will work hard to solve the university’s challenges and help it grow.
