“Grammys Were Made For Americans , Let’s Support Our Own” – Rex Omar

Ghanaian music legend and Presidential Staffer for the Black Star Experience, Rex Omar, has encouraged local musicians to put more value on Ghana’s own music award shows instead of focusing only on international ones like the Grammys.

In an interview with GhanaWeb on April 19, Rex Omar said the Grammy Awards were created mainly for American artists, not for Ghanaians.

Because of that, he believes Ghanaian musicians should stop looking down on local award schemes like the Ghana Music Awards.

“Sometimes when I hear people talk, I wonder. The Grammy is for Americans. So, if you don’t respect your own awards here in Ghana and expect to win a Grammy, I don’t get it,” he said.

He pointed out that even the BET Awards are organized by an American TV network, and that shows how every country or region can promote its own talents through its own platforms.

Rex Omar also shared that Ghana’s music industry can create an award scheme as big and respected as the Grammys—if everyone works together and supports it.

According to him, if it’s done properly and given the right attention, such an award could even attract interest from other countries.

“It’s not just about winning a trophy. It’s about building a whole system that supports the music industry and makes a real difference,” he explained.
