GTEC Directs St. Vincent College Of Education To Reopen

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has instructed the management of St. Vincent College of Education to reopen the institution following a week-long closure caused by a disagreement over the appointment of a new principal.

The closure was ordered on January 13 by the Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abukari II, after the college’s governing board allegedly overlooked his recommendation for the principal’s position.

This led to the resignation of the newly appointed principal, Professor Jonas Kwabla Fiadzawoo, just two weeks into his tenure. However, after engaging in discussions with the Ya-Na, GTEC’s Director-General, Professor Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, announced that an agreement had been reached.

The college will reopen on January 22, 2025, with operations set to resume as normal. In a statement to the media on January 21, Professor Abdulai reassured stakeholders that the issue had been resolved amicably and that the institution would return to its regular functions.

Meanwhile, Musah Yakubu, the Public Relations Officer for the Ya-Naa, clarified that the closure was not due to personal reasons. It was a temporary measure aimed at restoring calm while discussions were ongoing.

Yakubu confirmed that these talks had now concluded successfully, allowing St. Vincent College of Education to reopen as planned.
