Kintampo to Get a New University – Education Minister

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced plans to establish a new university in Kintampo, located in the Bono East Region.

The proposed name of the university is University of Health, Agriculture and Life Sciences. Mr. Iddrisu said he plans to present a bill to Parliament this year to make the university official.

“Once Parliament is back in session, I will table the bill so that the process of starting the university in Kintampo can begin,” he said.

Why a New University?

The goal, according to the minister, is to ensure that every region in Ghana has at least one major higher education institution. This supports former President John Mahama’s vision of making higher education more accessible across the country.

Event and Background

Mr. Iddrisu shared this news while inaugurating the new Governing Council of Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SDD-UBIDS) in Wa, in the Upper West Region.

The 11-member council is chaired by Dr. Benjamin Bewa-Nyog Kunbuor, a former Member of Parliament and Defence Minister. Their role is to help the university grow and become one of Ghana’s top institutions.

Changing University Names

The minister also said that the government plans to return some universities to their original names, reversing changes made during President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration.

“We are not saying those who had universities named after them didn’t make contributions,” Mr. Iddrisu explained. “But how the names were changed wasn’t right.”

He added that those deserving of national honours would still be recognized, but the universities’ names should reflect their historical identity.
