Mawuli SHS Needs 32 More Classrooms to End Double Track – Headmaster Appeals to Government

Mawuli Senior High School in the Volta Region is calling on the government to provide 32 additional classrooms to help the school fully move from the double-track to a single-track system under the Free SHS policy.

The Headmaster, Mr. Benjamin Yaw Dei, made the appeal during a visit by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education. He explained that the school currently has 64 classrooms, which are not enough for the growing student population. Without more classrooms, he said, the school cannot switch to a single-track system.

“Mawuli SHS is doing its best with what we have, but the number of students keeps increasing. To move to a single-track system, we urgently need 32 more classrooms to reduce overcrowding and improve teaching and learning,” Mr. Dei said.

The double-track system was introduced in 2018 to manage the large number of students entering SHS under the Free SHS programme. However, it was meant to be a temporary solution. Many schools, including Mawuli SHS, are still struggling with limited infrastructure.

The Chairman of the Education Committee and MP for Akatsi North, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, said the committee has taken note of the school’s challenges. He promised that their concerns would be included in a report to the Ministry of Education.

“We are committed to supporting quality education. We will make sure the government addresses urgent needs like more classrooms to help schools like Mawuli SHS transition to a single-track system,” he said.

The committee’s visit is part of a nationwide tour to assess how prepared SHSs are to end the double-track system.
