At the launch, Director Dr. Austin Wontepagah Luguterah reiterated the urgent need for a comprehensive national sports policy.

He said, “Political manifestos come and go, but policies are commitments to the nation. It’s time we implement a dedicated sports policy that will serve as a national asset, beyond party politics.”

Dr. Luguterah expressed frustration that Ghana still lacks a comprehensive sports policy despite decades of independence.

He acknowledged the foundational work of his predecessors, including Dr. Owusu Ansah, who established the Sports Directorate, and Dr. Bella, who implemented key policies.

The University Community Games aim to bring together students, staff, and the broader community through sports, promoting physical and mental well-being. Dr. Luguterah underscored his commitment to maintaining the university’s sports facilities, as he was quoted as saying, “I came into an environment with well-established sports facilities, and my administration will ensure they are kept in prime condition.

We aim to make the University of Ghana’s sports program not only sustainable but a model of excellence.”

This initiative aligns with the university’s mission to enhance the fitness, health, and holistic development of its community through participation in sports and recreational activities.

The University of Ghana offers various programs, including a Bachelor of Arts in Sport and Physical Culture Studies, which prepares students to manage and administer sports.
