WAEC Justifies WASSCE Results Delay Amid Student Protests Threat

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has defended the delay in releasing the 2024 WASSCE results, stating that investigations into alleged exam malpractices must be completed to ensure fairness.

John Kapi, Head of Public Relations at WAEC, explained that the delay is necessary to uphold the integrity of the examination process. His comments come after the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) issued a one-week ultimatum demanding the release of all withheld results or threatening nationwide protests.

NUGS has also called for the removal of WAEC Ghana’s Head, accusing the council of unfairly punishing students accused of malpractice. Speaking on Eyewitness News on February 4, 2025, Mr. Kapi reassured that WAEC is committed to a credible process, ensuring that only deserving candidates receive their grades.

“We need to sit down and involve key stakeholders in this issue to ensure fairness. We must award grades to students who truly deserve them,” he stated.

Despite this explanation, NUGS and other stakeholders remain frustrated, arguing that the prolonged delay is causing unnecessary stress and uncertainty for students.

The union has vowed to mobilize students for protests if WAEC does not meet its demands within the given deadline.
