Ghana’s First Female World Boxing Champion, Abigail Quartey, Reveals 4-Hour Daily Training Behind Her Title Win

Abigail Quartey, Ghana’s first female World boxing champion, has opened up about the dedication and sacrifice behind her success in winning the Women’s International Boxing Federation (WIBF)title.

The 28-year-old boxer defeated British opponent Sangeeta Birdi to become Ghana’s first female world title holder and the 11th world champion in the country’s boxing history.

In an exclusive interview with JoySports’ Haruna Mubarak, featured in the documentary “Abigail Quartey: Her Gloves, Her Glory”, Quartey shared the intensity of her training regimen.

She explained that her typical training day consisted of four hours of preparation:

  • Morning Jog: An hour and a half of jogging to build endurance.
  • Gym Training: Two and a half hours spent at the gym focusing on technique and conditioning.

Quartey emphasized the importance of preparation, noting that boxing is a demanding sport where even a single round requires immense energy. She also spoke about the personal sacrifices she made, including limiting her social life and prioritizing rest and recovery.

“I rarely went out. As soon as I finished training, I would eat something and go straight to bed,” she said. With an impressive 9 wins in 10 professional bouts, Quartey now ranks first in Ghana and 51st globally in her division.

As she celebrates this groundbreaking achievement, the focus now shifts to how she will defend her title and continue to make history in the sport. No opponent for her title defense has been confirmed yet.
