Gov’t Releases GH¢200 Million To Support Feeding In SHSs

The government has announced the release of an additional GH¢200 million to Senior High Schools (SHSs) across the country to address challenges with student feeding.

This was disclosed by Felix Kwakye, the Acting Spokesperson for President John Dramani Mahama, during an interview on January 21, 2025. He revealed that this fund supplements the payment of arrears to caterers and the recent distribution of food items to over 900 schools for the third term of the 2023/2024 academic year.

Kwakye highlighted that meetings involving key stakeholders, including the Chief of Staff, the Ghana Education Service (GES), the Ministry of Education, and the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), led to the immediate deployment of non-perishable food items to schools nationwide.

The government also emphasized its plan to decentralize the food procurement process to prevent further disruptions.

Kwakye explained, “The policy is to decentralize the purchase of food items to avoid issues caused by holding up large sums of money, which delayed payments to suppliers. Decentralization is the long-term solution.”

While some schools have already received the items, Kwakye assured that all schools will eventually receive the necessary supplies to sustain feeding programs effectively.

This intervention comes as a relief amid growing concerns about food shortages in SHSs and the need for consistent student meals.
