KNUST Study Reveals Parental Involvement Enhances Academic Performance

A recent study conducted by the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has highlighted the significant impact of parental involvement on the academic performance of university students in Ghana.

Published in Cogent Education, the research examined the role of parental visits, regular phone calls, and encouragement in boosting students’ cumulative weighted averages.

Using a sample of 613 students from KNUST, the study found that parental involvement positively influences academic outcomes.

According to the findings, campus visits improved academic performance by 0.005, regular phone calls contributed a 0.046 improvement, and words of encouragement had the most substantial effect, boosting performance by 0.061.

“These impacts, though seemingly small, highlight the importance of parental support and involvement in a university setting,” noted Dr.

Samuel Tawiah Baidoo from the Department of Economics.

The study also identified other factors influencing academic performance. Younger students were found to perform better academically, and involvement in groups or associations, such as academic and religious organizations, significantly enhanced students’ success.

Dr. Baidoo underscored the enduring role of parents in their children’s education, even at the tertiary level.

“This study offers a compelling reminder that parental involvement doesn’t end after high school graduation.

Instead, it continues to shape and support students as they navigate the demands of university life, demonstrating that success is truly a family effort,” he advised.

The study was co-authored by Dr. Paul Kwasi Kumah from the Department of Sociology and Social Work and Prof. Hadrat Yusif from the Department of Economics.

The research serves as a reminder to parents to maintain active engagement in their children’s education through regular check-ins, visits, and encouragement, fostering a supportive environment for academic success.
