Obuasi Mine Clash: AngloGold Ashanti Schools To Reopen January 27

Students of AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Schools in Obuasi will return to class on January 27, 2025, as tensions in the mining community begin to subside.

Initially scheduled to reopen on January 22, the reopening date was postponed to ensure calm is fully restored.

A statement from the school management explained, “Management is continuing broader consultations with relevant authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone upon reopening.”

This decision comes in the wake of a violent clash between the military and illegal miners in Obuasi, which led to the closure of private and public schools due to security concerns.

The situation has disrupted academic progress, especially for students preparing for key examinations like the Cambridge IGCSE, Checkpoint, and the 2025 BECE.

AGA Schools management assured stakeholders that measures are being implemented to recover lost academic time. “To make up for the lost contact hours, particularly for our candidates, we will adjust the academic calendar,” the statement added.

Both AGA Schools and the Williams and Brew School are expected to resume normal activities on January 27.
