Over 100 Shops Destroyed In Devastating Fire At Kantamanto Market

A devastating fire erupted at Kantamanto Market in Accra’s Central Business District early Thursday, January 2, 2025, destroying over 100 shops and displacing hundreds of traders.

The fire, which started around 1:00 AM, spread rapidly, prompting the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to deploy 13 fire trucks from across the city.

Fire Service spokesperson ADO1 Alex King Nartey described the situation as “very serious.” He noted that while firefighters initially controlled the blaze, a lack of water hydrants and the depletion of water supplies allowed the flames to reignite.

He confirmed no reports of severe casualties but warned that fully extinguishing the fire could take up to two days due to its scale and difficult conditions. Desperate traders and eyewitnesses joined the firefighting efforts but were unable to stop the destruction.

Some traders suspect foul play, hinting at possible political motives behind the incident. Authorities have launched investigations to uncover the cause. Displaced traders are urgently appealing for support to rebuild their businesses and prevent future occurrences.

This tragic event has reignited concerns over recurring fires at Kantamanto Market and highlighted the need for improved safety measures and infrastructure to protect the market and its traders.
