University of Ghana Wins Second Gold in Women’s Goalball at GUSA Games

The University of Ghana (UG) has added another gold medal to its tally at the ongoing Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) Games.

Following their victory in women’s tennis doubles, the UG women’s goalball team secured gold in a thrilling final against the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) on Thursday, January 9, 2025.

The final, held at the S.K. Adjepong Lecture Theatre, saw UG dominate from start to finish.

They led 8-0 by halftime and added four more goals in the second half, while UEW managed to score two, resulting in a decisive 12-2 victory for UG.

Reflecting on the victory, UG’s goalball head coach, Benedict Sarpei Ntreh, expressed his delight, stating the team’s perseverance throughout the competition.

“It feels good, it’s a joy. It hasn’t been easy, especially our first match against KNUST. They have the height, the build, and they are very strong, but we’ve been in this for a long time, and we defeated them. We showed them that goalball belongs to us,” he said.

UG’s victory marks a major comeback after missing out on gold during the 2022 edition hosted by KNUST.

Coach Benedict attributed the team’s success to discipline, training, and a strong rapport between the coach and players. “It’s all about having a good coach and attentive players. Discipline is key. In anything, if you have a good coach, you’re good to go.

And if you have good players who listen to you, you’re good to go. It’s all about training and discipline,” he explained.

The UG women began their campaign with an emphatic 19-9 victory over KNUST, which forced the Kumasi-based university to forfeit.

They followed up with wins against Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU) and the University of Cape Coast (UCC), defeating the hosts 11-1 to secure their place in the final.

Goalball, a sport designed for visually impaired athletes, was introduced to the GUSA Games in 2014 as an exhibition event.

It became a competitive category in 2016 when UEW hosted the games. UG has been a dominant force in the sport, consistently winning gold since its inclusion, except for the 2022 setback.
