Suppliers’ Concerns Over Contracts Cause Food Shortages In SHSs

The Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, Kofi Asare, has attributed the ongoing food shortages in Senior High Schools (SHSs) to suppliers’ fears regarding the future of their contracts under the new government.

These concerns have led to a significant disruption in the School Feeding Programme, with suppliers hesitant to deliver food due to uncertainty over whether their contracts will be renewed or terminated.

Mr. Asare noted that while the issue appears to be a liquidity challenge, the primary concern lies with suppliers who are unsure about the continuation of their contracts.

He emphasized that a public statement from the new government confirming that contracts will not be automatically terminated and that payments will be made could help restore confidence in the food supply chain.

He further stated that such reassurance would alleviate current tensions and enable suppliers to deliver food to schools, alleviating the shortages.

However, he also pointed out that addressing the liquidity issues in the sector would be necessary for long-term stability.

In addition, the Conference of Heads of Assisted Senior High Schools (CHASS) has urged parents to support schools during this difficult period, especially in regions where food shortages are particularly severe.
