University Of Ghana Year Abroad Students Urge Authorities To Resolve Funding Delays

A total of 32 students from the School of Languages at the University of Ghana, Legon, have issued an urgent appeal over prolonged delays in funding for the 2024/2025 Year Abroad Program.

The program, which is a mandatory component of their academic training, has been significantly impacted due to the failure of the Ministry of Finance to release funds to the Scholarship Secretariat.

According to an open letter from the students, the Secretariat has not provided funding since August 2024, despite repeated assurances.

The Year Abroad Program is vital for students studying Arabic, Russian, Chinese, Kiswahili, and Spanish, as it allows them to gain immersive linguistic and cultural experiences necessary for their education and career goals.

Without funding, the program—and consequently their academic progression—remains in jeopardy.

The distribution of affected students includes:

Arabic: 6 students

Russian: 8 studentsChinese: 5 students

Kiswahili: 8 students

Spanish: 5 students

The students have also raised concerns over possible mismanagement of funds meant for the program.

In their letter, they called on the government to investigate the matter and ensure accountability.

“This program is not just an academic requirement; it is essential for our professional growth and future opportunities,” the students stated.

The group explained that most of them are unable to self-fund the program and warned that time is running out to secure placements.

They urged the Ministry of Finance and the Scholarship Secretariat to act swiftly. The students further appealed to the public and media to amplify their plight.
