Premier League Releases Statement On Liverpool’s Penalty In 2-2 Draw With Man Utd

The Premier League has explained its decision to award Liverpool a penalty during their 2-2 draw with Manchester United after a VAR review highlighted Matthijs de Ligt’s handball.

Referee Michael Oliver initially missed the incident during live play. However, VAR officials intervened, advising him to review the play on the pitch-side monitor.

In a statement posted on the Premier League Match Centre’s social media account, it was clarified:

“VAR recommended an on-field review for a possible handball by de Ligt, deeming that his arm was raised in an unnatural position. Upon review, the referee overturned his original call of no penalty.”

The penalty, converted by Mohamed Salah, briefly gave Liverpool a 2-1 lead. The dramatic match saw Lisandro Martinez put United ahead early in the second half, Cody Gakpo equalize for Liverpool, and Amad Diallo score late to restore parity after Salah’s spot-kick.
