Accra Sports Stadium Presidential Entrance Turns Into Dumping Yard

The Presidential entrance of the Accra Sports Stadium has fallen into disrepair, turning into a dumping ground just seven weeks ahead of Ghana’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Despite the pitch being in good condition, other areas around the facility paint a grim picture. JoySports’ inspection revealed heaps of waste, including broken chairs, tables, faulty machines, and fridges, cluttering the Presidential entrance pathway.

The stadium’s infrastructure is also in a dire state. The water supply system is non-functional, and the electricity room is riddled with exposed wires, holes, and no lighting. Nearby rooms, including those near the scoreboard light, are filled with garbage and show signs of rodent activity.

Structural weaknesses, including visible cracks, further highlight the facility’s degradation. Washrooms emit a foul stench due to poor maintenance, while key offices, such as the Head of the Technical Department’s office, suffer from broken tiles, damaged ceilings, and disconnected electricity.

The Ghana Project Monitoring Group (GPMG), an organization focused on addressing neglected projects, is calling for urgent intervention from the Sports Ministry. GPMG member Ernest Banama expressed the group’s commitment to drawing attention to the issues and starting cleanup efforts while awaiting government support.

The Accra Sports Stadium, once dubbed the “Nation’s Wembley,” received a GH¢12.5 million renovation for the 2018 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

However, its current state raises concerns about readiness for hosting upcoming matches, including the Black Stars’ World Cup qualifier against Chad.
