Delayed WASSCE Results Threaten University Academic Calendar in Ghana

Published on

The Association of Vice Chancellors Ghana is sounding the alarm over the delayed release of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results, warning that it could significantly disrupt the academic calendar of universities.

According to the Executive Secretary, Dr. Sena Kpeglo-Freiku, “Most universities had planned to welcome first-year students by the second or third week of January.

The admission process itself is a time-intensive exercise that involves analysing results, assigning students to programmes, and finalising placements.”

Dr. Kpeglo-Freiku expressed her concerns in an interview on Joy FM, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding the government’s debt owed to the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC).

She noted that even if the results are released soon, the admission process will likely be pushed into February or later, creating a domino effect that disrupts academic calendars and reduces the effective time for teaching and learning. “With the delays, even if the results are released soon, the process will be pushed into February or later.

This creates a domino effect, disrupting academic calendars and reducing the effective time for teaching and learning,” she bemoaned.

The Ministry of Education expects WAEC to release the results by December 29, 2024, after receiving GH₵85 million from the government to offset part of the GH¢118 million owed.

However, Dr. Kpeglo-Freiku emphasized the need for a clear and definitive timeline for the release of the results, stating, “Universities must know when to expect them so they can reorganise their admission processes and academic schedules. The current uncertainty is not sustainable and is causing undue anxiety for all involved.”
