Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter has passed away at the age of 100, the Carter Center announced. He died peacefully at his home in Plains, Georgia, on Sunday, December 29, 2024.
Carter, who served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981, holds the record as the longest-lived U.S. president.
His presidency was marked by significant foreign policy challenges, but his term ended after he lost his re-election bid to Ronald Reagan.
In recent years, Carter faced several health issues, including melanoma that had spread to his liver and brain. In 2023, his family announced that he had opted for hospice care at home after discontinuing medical treatments.
Despite leaving the White House over four decades ago, Carter remained a prominent figure through his humanitarian efforts, earning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
He devoted much of his post-presidential life to promoting human rights, combating disease, and fostering peace through the Carter Center, an organization he founded in 1982.
The Carter Center said in a statement: “Our founder, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, passed away this afternoon in Plains, Georgia. His life was a testament to service and humility.”
