Hooliganism in SHSs – Times Students Caused Chaos

Published on

Violence and disorder among students in Ghana’s Senior High Schools (SHSs) are becoming more common, raising serious concerns.

In recent months, there have been several troubling incidents involving fights, destruction of school property, and even deaths.

This worrying trend has led many people to call for stricter rules and better security in schools to prevent more violence.

Although student fights have happened in the past, the number and seriousness of recent cases are alarming.

Some are now debating whether corporal punishment should be brought back to help deal with indiscipline among students.

From January to April 2025, there have been seven major violent incidents in SHSs. Here is a look at the first of them:

Fight Between Kinbu SHS and Accra Technical Training Centre (ATTC)
In January 2025, students from Kinbu Senior High School and Accra Technical Training Centre got into a violent fight. During the clash, one student was badly hurt—reportedly cut in the face with a machete.

It’s not clear what exactly caused the fight, but sources say there has been a long-running rivalry between the two schools, which may have led to the violence.
