Ghana’s Minister for Communications and Digitalization, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has strongly defended the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy introduced by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The initiative, which offers free secondary education, has faced criticism from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Speaking on Pure FM with Kwame Adinkra, the Ablekuma West MP rejected claims that the Free SHS program hinders development in other areas.
“Education is the foundation for solving the challenges we face as a nation. Those who criticize it fail to see how crucial it is for progress,” she said.
Ursula also shared how education transformed her own life. “My mother sold charcoal and took every opportunity she could to support us. She knew education was the key to giving her children a better future,” she recalled.
She credited her education for enabling her to become a lawyer, women’s rights advocate, and politician. “Without education, I wouldn’t be where I am today. My mother’s sacrifices would have been meaningless without the opportunities I gained from learning,” she said.
Ursula emphasized that the Free SHS program is more than just a policy—it is a long-term investment in Ghana’s future. “Education shapes leaders, problem-solvers, and innovators. This program is building the minds that will tackle Ghana’s challenges in the years ahead,” she explained.
