Mahama Announces Plans To Restore UGMC Management To University Of Ghana

Published on

President-Elect John Mahama has revealed plans to return the management of the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) to the University of Ghana, citing the need to achieve the hospital’s original purpose.

The UGMC was envisioned by the late Prof. John Evans Atta Mills to be managed by a subsidiary of the university, ensuring operational efficiency and high standards of care.

However, under the current management of the Ghana Health Service, the facility operates at only 40% of its capacity.

Mahama reiterated the urgency of restoring the original management structure to reduce Ghanaians’ need to seek medical treatment abroad.

He noted that the Ghana Health Service already manages many hospitals and cannot effectively manage the UGMC.

After scaling up operations to 100%, Mahama intends to maximize the facility’s potential to provide advanced healthcare services locally.

The President-Elect’s plan aims to address the current inefficiencies and ensure the UGMC operates at its full potential, as it will provide much-needed healthcare services to Ghanaians.

This move is expected to have a significant impact on the country’s healthcare system, enabling the UGMC to become a center of excellence for medical education and research.
