The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has suspended its planned demonstration against the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) over the withholding and cancellation of results for some students who sat for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The protest was initially scheduled for February 25, 2025, to pressure WAEC to release the results of affected students, many of whom had been left uncertain about their admission into tertiary institutions. However, NUGS announced the suspension of the protest after receiving new commitments from WAEC.
According to a statement from NUGS, the decision came after an emergency meeting with WAEC officials and the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES). During the meeting, WAEC assured that all withheld results would be released by March 1, 2025.
The statement from NUGS reads:
“Following an emergency meeting with West African Examinations Council (WAEC) officials and the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, NUGS – National Union of Ghana Students has suspended the planned demonstration scheduled for 25th February 2025. WAEC has given firm assurances that all pending withheld results will be released by the 1st of March 2025.”
The development brings relief to thousands of students and parents who have been anxiously awaiting the release of the results. Many had expressed frustration over the delays and the alleged unfair handling of examination malpractice cases, which led to the cancellations of results.
The controversy surrounding the withheld results began when WAEC took action against students suspected of examination malpractice, affecting hundreds of candidates across the country. NUGS had previously called for transparency and an immediate release of the results, as many affected students relied on their results for university admissions and scholarship opportunities.
