The University of Ghana is gearing up to host the inaugural Corporate Football League, where 16 institutions will compete for the title of corporate football champion.
The league, scheduled to run from February to July 2025, builds on the excitement generated by last year’s UG Corporate Football Gala, which was won by The Union Ghana.
At a recent meeting held by the University of Ghana Sports and Wellness Directorate, team officials and players laid out their ambitions for the season. The atmosphere was energetic and determined, as every team expressed confidence in their ability to excel.
Emmanuel Avi from Lancaster University expressed optimism about his team’s potential, saying, “We will put in the work to be on top. Our only threat is the Ghana Armed Forces Officers Sports Club, but I know we can beat Telecel.”
His confidence was echoed by Nana Yaw Odame of Union Ghana, the reigning champions, who boldly stated, “We’re winning! We’re willing the cup to ourselves for the next five years. If anybody wants to win the league, they shouldn’t compete—they should come and negotiate for it.”
Other teams also shared their thoughts. Kennedy Ateamene of UG College of Education acknowledged the challenges from last year’s gala but remained hopeful: “The zeal is there, and the boys are training hard. Union troubled us so much during the gala, but we will overtake them.”
Daniel Bayakpa of Central Administration added, “We will match everyone boot for boot. Union is somehow a threat, but we’re preparing for them.”Among the 16 teams, both the Forestry Commission and the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) are eager to make their mark.
Eric Ansah from the Forestry Commission mentioned a new advantage for his team: “Our new CEO is going to play, so expect more from us. I don’t see anyone as a threat, but NPA will come after us, and we’re ready.”
Similarly, Rocher M.K. Davon of NPA stressed his team’s rigorous preparation, noting, “At NPA, we don’t take things lightly. We’re going to have fun, but we’re always prepared. We train all year.”
Organizers have emphasized that the competition is more than just a football tournament. The league is designed to promote health, community spirit, and camaraderie among corporate entities. Kodwo Brumpon of UG Alumni summed up the passion for the game by saying, “We’ve got the team, and we’re coming for the cup. We just want to beat Union home and away, but we’re winning the league.”
As the tournament draws near, teams are busy refining their strategies, intensifying their training sessions, and rallying their supporters. With high stakes and unmatched energy, the University of Ghana Corporate Football League promises a season full of drama, passion, and unforgettable moments for fans and players alike.
